The Most Important Question You Will Ask Yourself

The recruiting process is stressful, exciting, scary, fun, and simply put, full of emotion. You’re working for your future, the next four years of your life and beyond! It is just because of this that you want to make sure that you are choosing your school, your new home, for the right reasons.

Yes, there are so many different options but at some point you will narrow them down to just a few schools that you are interested in and vice versa. At this time you will be thinking to yourself that you thought the stressful part was all over (marketing yourself and finding schools that are interested in you as well), but you might find that the most stressful part of the process is now when you are choosing which school to attend. This is when you need to ask yourself the most important question of this entire process:

If sports were not in my life, would this school still be HOME?

If you weren’t being offered scholarships, would you still want to go there? If you didn’t have the same coach you had now, would you still love your team? If you got injured, would you be somewhere you loved still?

It’s not always going to be about sports. The real reason you’re going to college isn’t sports either, no matter what your goals are sports wise. You are going to get a very privileged and unique education that many are not so lucky to be able to have. You need to make sure that you choose a school that has your major or field of interest so that later in your life when you are not pursuing sports, you have the ways and means to support yourself. You need to make sure that you feel comfortable at this new school, as this is where you will be living for up to four years of your life. Make sure that no matter what happens, you are going to have an amazing experience that will be able to carry over to your life after sports.

So, with that taken into consideration, your choice should now become a lot easier. Remind yourself to take a deep breath and remember that no matter what happens, it will all be worth it in the end!
